Bike cleaned, chain lubricated, bought a new front & tail light and reflective vest. Had enough nutribars, electrols, spare tubes, puncture kit… & enough in me to finish the ride.
Woke up @4, got ready and off to cubbon park, started a bit late with a fantastic rider Harish (met him on TFN), good steady ride once the highway started. First break and breakfast after 50 km. Targeted to reach the 104KM mark by 11 AM
BUT…
around 86 KM down (in close to 3.5 hours) – 2 spokes of the rear wheel broke. The wheal bent and jammed against the break in the middle of no where… No bike shops around, closest place to sit & eat was 3 KM behind.
So the ride was over for me, I walked 3 KM back to CCD at the nearest town Maddur. Informed the Ride Director and called Varun (a very close friend) to come and take me home…
Bad luck or bad bike ? Not too sure… The same thing happened to me on TFN and now I am planning to change all the spokes on my bike.
I wish I had bought a better bike! But when I bought the bike, I never knew I would be doing this distance and this pace

Hi Namit,
i just read your review of RR 5.2, which’s rather old. and now i read the last para of your post above (“I wish I had bought a better bike !”)…that’s leaving me more confused. i recently came out of my utter confusion on what to buy, between Rock Machine & RR 5.2, but today i saw GT Aggressor at a firefox showroom, and Trek 3700 too. i was again double-minded, and your this post adds to my worry. Please, if you can, could you tell me which one should i opt for, amongst these three, ie, GT Aggressor (16.5k), Trek 3700 (19k), or RR 5.2 (16K)…please ?!
thanks !
Hello Namit,
I have to tell you that I admire your willpower and dedication to living a healthy lifestyle. I myself train for half-marathons and recently started cycling and love it. I did a bike tour from my city to another..about a 7hr. day of biking. It consisted of 62 miles each way..it was great! I plan on doing a few rides this year; long distance road biking. My goal is to become a better athlete and keep my health in shape.
I would recommend Trek 3700 over RR 5.2 I haven’t seen GT Aggressor, so I wont be able to comment on it. The biggest msitake that I would say I made was not figuring out do I want to ride off-road or on it
I have a road bike and I love it !
Not to add to the confusion, but I would suggest, think very hard about off-roading vs. road riding & decide on the bike.
